Let them eat cake
Microsoft recently posted their first advertisement in what appears to be a response to the popular (although, much maligned) Mac v. PC advertisements run by Apple. It features Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates in a somewhat comical situation of buying shoes from a discount shoe store in the mall. Personally, I think the two make a somewhat awkward, yet pretty funny duo. My favorite line is “Is that the conquistador?…they run tight”.
The point of the advertisement is somewhat vague. It appears to allude to high quality at affordable prices. But, I do not want to read too much into it, because, I would then have to try to explain why churros are a reoccuring prop throughout the commercial. I do think that overall the advertisement was a smart play by Microsoft. Rather than going the McCain attack route of Apple (Yes, I went there. It is the political season), they decided to take a different road that is both interesting and funny.
I do not think the end result of the ads is soft, chewy PCs. But, I can’t help but think Microsoft is taking a shot at Apple and saying “Let them eat cake”.

Yeah I saw this ad last night and frankly it didn’t make any damn sense. I don’t even think it was that funny. Hopefully they can get better - they are paying Seinfeld $10 million for this campaign.

I think that ad was hilarious and brilliant. I laughed the whole time. What is 10 mil to Microsoft? … nothing.

[...] I mentioned in Let them eat cake, I think these ads are as much about approach as they are about content. I think to some extent [...]
